Doctor Who Saved Old Man On Flight Received Bonus, But Then...

A few days ago, we published the story of doctors Zhang Hong, a surgeon from the first affiliated hospital of Jinan University Hospital (Guangzhou Overseas Chinese hospital), and Xiao ZhanXiang, a surgeon from Hainan People's hospital, who drained a man’s bladder in mid-flight emergency on a plane from Guangzhou to New York:

During the medical emergency, Doctor Xiao ZhanXiang kept adjusting the puncture position and angle based on the old man’s bladder volume in order to ensure the entire process would run smoothly.

On November 25, the Hainan Health Committee of the People's Hospital of Hainan province held a meeting to learn from Doctor Xiao’s experience and reward him with a RMB 100,000 bonus, which he donated entirely to a charitable foundation and special fund dedicated to honoring future medical staff who use their knowledge and expertise for the good of society.

"To be honest, the subsequent impact of this incident was beyond my expectations. As surgeons, we face far more complicated and urgent cases, yet I know that anyone else in this room would have done the same. Our mission as doctors and medical practitioners is to assist those in need and improve their health and well-being any way we can. Regardless of the time and place, we would always assist this man.”

He ended his speech with a touching note: “Helping patients in distress is our life’s duty. We cherish life and work hard to make sure our patients can continue cherishing it with their loved ones as well.” 

A few days earlier, on November 21, Dr. Zhang was also praised for his assistance by the director of his hospital, Dr. Xu Anding, and the rest of his staff. The nature of Dr. Zhang’s recognition remains undisclosed.
